San Dimas–La Verne–Claremont Hills

Residents of communities around San Dimas, La Verne, and Claremont enjoy remarkable hiking, biking, running, bird-watching, and equestrian opportunities at the base of the foothills on the north edge of their towns. In particular, Marshall Canyon Regional Park and Claremont Hills Wilderness Park are extremely popular, and worthy of the occasional visit from hikers who live farther away.

As suburban sprawl has taken over the open space at the base of the foothills, Los Angeles County set aside 678 acres in the oak-filled Marshall and Live Oak Canyons for a regional park. Now, a maze of shady trails tempts hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers to lose themselves in the canyons. In 1997, the City of Claremont established a wilderness park on the north edge of town with a system of fire roads through the chaparral-clad hills, offering visitors excellent hiking opportunities and panoramic views. These parks form the heart of a 5-mile corridor of protected open space and natural habitat.

This chapter describes several hikes within these parks and on nearby foothills. If you have more time, you can combine several of the hikes into a half-day workout.
